There was a large, dark red and blue bruise and swelling on the top of Anderson Varejao’s left knee as his left foot rested in a bucket of ice in the locker room after the game Wednesday night.

But the Cavaliers’ frantic forward was smiling despite a 90-81 loss to the Atlanta Hawks . After what looked like a very scary fall in the fourth quarter, the initial diagnosis is that Varejao avoided what could have been an extremely serious injury to his left leg.

Doctors at Philips Arena put Varejao through a battery of tests. They declared his knee to be fine, save for the bruise. There is a little more concern about his Achilles tendon, but the doctors told Varejao that they didn’t believe that it was serious and termed it a sprain.
