Well, that was quick. The Boston Celtics recalled second-round draft pick Gabe Pruitt from the Utah Flash of the NBA Developmental League on Monday.
As a result, Pruitt will not play tonight, when the expansion Flash face the Dakota Wizards in their first-ever home game at the McKay Events Center. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
Pruitt was assigned to the Flash last Friday - just before their season-opening games at Anaheim and Los Angeles.
A product of USC, Pruitt returned home in time for Thanksgiving weekend and averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 37 minutes in those two games. He hit the game-deciding jumper with 3.9 seconds remaining in the Flash’s 110-109 victory over the Arsenal.
“Originally, [the Celtics] thought he would be staying longer,” said Flash coach Brad Jones. “But they had a couple of guys get banged up and decided they needed him back.”
While Pruitt’s recall won’t help the Flash, Jones said, “That’s what we’re here for. He played exceptionally well the first night and hopefully gained some valuable experience. Instead of sitting [in Boston] doing nothing, he got 37 minutes a game for us. . . . He was very appreciative of his experience here.”
Just 16 hours after beating Anaheim, the Flash played sluggishly and lost to the D-Fenders, 109-92. But Utah Jazz second-round pick Kyrylo Fesenko had 21 points and nine rebounds.
Fesenko “played really well,” Jones said, “except for some foul trouble. But he’s getting more and more confidence offensively. He really went strong to the basket, which is something we’ve spent a little extra time on with him.”
Asked about playing at home for the first time, Jones said, “It’s going to be neat. Our people have put a whole lot into this and they’re expecting a good crowd. I hope our guys understand what this means to our franchise.”
