The 76ers and coach Maurice Cheeks are closing in on a contract extension. An NBA source said last night that both sides have been in negotiations regarding a new deal, one that appears imminent. Cheeks, 51, is in the final season of a three-year contract and has received high marks among the players for keeping the team together during difficult times.

The Jason Kidd era is over, and the Nets are also believed to be interested in trading Vince Carter, who has been a disappointment this season. However, Carter’s contract may make it impossible for Rod Thorn to ship him out before Thursday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.There have been rumors that the Nets have been trying to talk the Pacers into taking Carter in exchange for Jermaine O’Neal, but Indiana hasn’t budged.

For the second time in less than a week, the Mavericks are on the verge of bringing New Jersey Nets point guard Jason Kidd back to Dallas.This time, the deal appears to be free of sticking points. The Mavericks will trade five players, two first-round draft picks and $3 million to the Nets for Mr. Kidd, still considered one of the top players at his position even as his 35th birthday approaches next month.

An NBA executive confirmed before Sunday’s All-Star Game that the deal had been finalized and probably will be submitted to the league office today for formal approval. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would only say: ’It’s breathing, but not done.’ It seems clear, however, that the details are agreed to by both sides. Only the league can interject now.

Former NBA star Michael Jordan during a ceremony on February 14 announced a $500,000 donation to the Slidell Boys and Girls Club to build a new gymnasium.

Daniel “Boobie” Gibson lead the Sophomore squad to their sixth straight Challenge win, a 136-109 victory at New Orleans Arena.


Although the game was surprisingly competitive in the first half and it was tied at 24 with 10:46 remaining in the first half, the Rookies could not keep the pace with the Sophomores. Gibson checked in and immediately hit a three off an assist from Jordan Farmar and later four straight bombs to help the Sophomores take back control.


“He made three in a row early and I was like, ‘Wow, this dude’s on fire,’” Sophomore Brandon Roy said after the game. “And I did a dribble handoff with him and he made his fourth. I was like, ‘We’re pretty much gonna win this game.’”

A day after saying he had no superstars,’ Knick coach Isiah Thomas said he will ask the Nets what it would take to land the on-the-block Jason Kidd. The Nets have been forever looking for a big center, and Eddy Curry could be involved in a potential deal, possibly along with Renaldo Balkman, whom the Nets like. Yesterday, Thomas finally admitted the Knicks no longer are built around Curry/Zach Randolph inside, and that the club needs to excel in two styles, not just as a power, inside team.

Agent Aaron Goodwin announced today that Damon Stoudamire, who will clear waivers and become a free agent Thursday at 10 p.m. ET after his buyout from the Grizzlies, has committed to join the Spurs after also considering the Suns and the Raptors, with whom Stoudamire won Rookie of the Year honors in the 1995-96 season.
